The Issue
Period Poverty:
Period poverty is commonly defined as the inability to afford menstrual products, and having a lack of knowledge or understanding of menstruation.
World wide, up to 500 million women and girls are living each month in period poverty. Due to economic constraints, they lack access to essential tools for menstrual hygiene management (MHM), e.g menstrual products and handwashing facilities.

The Homemade Alternative
When women and girls cannot afford menstrual items they tend to make 'make-shift' sanitary items. In Ghana this is the most common form of menstrual health management.
